In the book
“Orphans of the Secret War”, we learn more about the untold impact of the
Vietnam War on the people of Southeast Asia. Very little people actually know
about the inner secret war occurring in Laos that bred a way of life that
continues today.
Ever since
the US Air Force moved its way into Udon Thani, Thailand, during the Vietnam
War with the promise of great fortunes and success for the locals—the mentality
of impoverished rural farmers changed
the scale of economy and the culture in the region for the long-term.
In “Orphans
of the Secret War” we can see this firsthand through the story of a Thai orphan
during this period. During the decades long Indochina conflict, there was a
secret shift in this area for rural villagers to work closely with the US government
and soldiers in the hopes that prosperity would take form. The result was much
more. In the firsthand story of a young woman growing up in this area, we learn
about subsistence living as rural rice farmers with the ongoing dream of being
able to become a wife of one of the American soldiers. Many of these women
would become pregnant and unfortunately give birth to children that were
persecuted. With many Thai terms that essentially mean “halfbreed”
“half-human-half-ghosts”, many of these children are abandoned and given up the
orphanages.
In this
firsthand account we hear about the difficult life of one of these children who
is forced to conform to the new Thai system and whose family was heavily
persecuted to the point where he was in fact abandoned and dropped off in an
orphanage.
This
riveting tale tells the story of adoption and life in an orphanage during one
of the most difficult times in Thailand's history. The author’s account is
eye-opening and shocking with brief touches on prostitution in Thailand as well
as the true impact that war can have on a region. Orphans of the Secret War is
available online today through Barnes & Noble, Amazon, CreateSpace, Lulu, Kobo and Everything Else and the Apple iBook stores. Learn about the miracle of adoption and see
the world from a different perspective with Orphans of The Secret War.
