Orphans of the Secret War: War of Desires

In the book “Orphans of the Secret War”, we learn more about the untold impact of the Vietnam War on the people of Southeast Asia. Very little people actually know about the inner secret war occurring in Laos that bred a way of life that continues today.

Ever since the US Air Force moved its way into Udon Thani, Thailand, during the Vietnam War with the promise of great fortunes and success for the locals—the mentality of  impoverished rural farmers changed the scale of economy and the culture in the region for the long-term.

In “Orphans of the Secret War” we can see this firsthand through the story of a Thai orphan during this period. During the decades long Indochina conflict, there was a secret shift in this area for rural villagers to work closely with the US government and soldiers in the hopes that prosperity would take form. The result was much more. In the firsthand story of a young woman growing up in this area, we learn about subsistence living as rural rice farmers with the ongoing dream of being able to become a wife of one of the American soldiers. Many of these women would become pregnant and unfortunately give birth to children that were persecuted. With many Thai terms that essentially mean “halfbreed” “half-human-half-ghosts”, many of these children are abandoned and given up the orphanages.

In this firsthand account we hear about the difficult life of one of these children who is forced to conform to the new Thai system and whose family was heavily persecuted to the point where he was in fact abandoned and dropped off in an orphanage.

This riveting tale tells the story of adoption and life in an orphanage during one of the most difficult times in Thailand's history. The author’s account is eye-opening and shocking with brief touches on prostitution in Thailand as well as the true impact that war can have on a region. Orphans of the Secret War is available online today through Barnes & Noble, Amazon, CreateSpace, Lulu, Kobo and Everything Else and the Apple iBook stores. Learn about the miracle of adoption and see the world from a different perspective with Orphans of The Secret War.

On the Beach by Steve Schmale

Mind provoking but kind of bizarre with lots of drugs and alcohol references. Good depiction what addiction does to a person.

Twenty-something Lenny Decker is a man of few plans, and he seems to like it that way. Bumming around a sleepy California beach town, Lenny appears to live a life of Zen-like slacker simplicity. His days and nights are a seemingly endless loop of visits to the local bar and pick-up basketball games, punctuated by long stretches in his apartment with only a twelve pack, a bong, and a TV of questionable quality for company.

But Lenny has a thing or two to deal with: a near brush with success in his past has left him running for the comfort of a life where the stakes aren't just low, they're non-existent. Then there's the woman who sees past Lenny's stoned exterior and is challenging him in ways he hasn't been tested in years.

The One by Kiera Cass

The One. Kiera Cass. 2014. HarperCollins. 323 pages.

One thing I can definitely say about all three books in this series is that they are all super-quick reads. Once I start reading, I don't want to stop. That being said, I can't say that I actually think about the books or the characters or the story after I'm done. I don't forget the story or the characters mind you. I've always liked that I can pick up the next book without any worries or confusion. That could be because the books aren't all that complex though.

In the third book, readers spend time with Prince Maxon and America Singer. She's one of four young ladies still in the running to be the next princess. The others are Celeste, Kriss, and Elise. Prince Maxon and America have always, always argued with one another. He brings out the fight in her. And he can't get enough of her honestly. Perhaps because she is so very different than his mother?

America (finally) admits to herself that she is really, truly not-kidding-around in LOVE with Maxon. Does she tell him? Are you kidding? She wouldn't dream of actually communicating with him. She'd rather nag, nag, nag him for keeping the other girls around. His excuse? You never, ever show me how you feel about me, you just yell at me. He has a point. But I suppose she does as well.

Communication is something that America fails at, I have to say. Even though America knows that she doesn't love Aspen anymore in that way, she is not telling him that. And she's not telling Maxon that she loves him. And then she realizes that sooner or later, Maxon may need to be told that at one point in her past, Aspen was a love interest.

The trilogy is definitely predictable and a bit silly. But it's almost an irresistible silly.

My Zombie Apocalypse Plan by Graham Parke

It used to be that only preppers and people with a high level of government clearance had the foresight to create a plan for the end of the world. But these days any halfway intelligent person needs to have some kind of plan, and as I’ve always aspired to be at least a half way intelligent person, I decided to hash one out.

Look at the evidence. Global viral infections are a yearly event, tsunamis and earth quakes are now common occurrences. If you’re still waiting for a sign that the end is nigh, you might as well stand out in traffic in a tin foil hat telling people we’re going to be okay, because nobody will take you seriously.

And to me it seems only a matter of time before one of these freaky global viruses mutates sufficiently to actually reanimate dead flesh and put its host in a permanent state of annoyance. Ergo; we need to develop a strategy for the impeding zombie apocalypse.

Now, you may ask why I would go through the trouble of creating my own strategy when there are so many existing strategies to be found on the net. A quick search will tell you the best weapons, the best foods, the best way to prep. However, I feel that none of these plans take into account the real hardships people will have to face. So I spent some time looking at all the possible angles and came up with what I believe is the most sane and most efficient Zombie apocalypse plan to date. And I believe it’s as simple as it is effective;

Basically, I intend to die in the very first wave.

That’s it. That makes the most sense to me. More sense at least than undergoing all manner of hardship only to die eventually anyway (through bites/malnutrition/or terminally chapped lips).

For any plan the long term survival rate is zero. Of course, it could be argued that the zombie apocalypse is the least worrying apocalypse of all. On the apocalypse scale, it’s like a flee bite. There is no real damage to the ecosystem, our infrastructure will remain intact, the power grid won’t melt down. Basically, all we need to do is wait it out. Say, a couple of weeks. Just long enough for the re-animated dead to decompose to the point where they simply fall apart and movement is no longer an option.

Sure, it’ll be annoying. Insurance rates will go through the roof. You’ll lose some slow and fat loved ones. The smell won’t be that great. It will take ages for your favorite TV shows to start up again. Marauders will raid your food stocks and trample mud into your carpet. There’ll be some broken windows too, believe me. But, ultimately, we’ll be okay.

Still, before we get out the other end, supply lines will be disrupted and stores will run out of toothpaste, deodorant, and chap-stick.

So, for those reasons, I’m out.

Graham Parke is responsible for a number of technical publications and has recently patented a self-folding map. He has been described as both a humanitarian and a pathological liar. Convincing evidence to support either allegation has yet to be produced.

No Hope for Gomez! is his fiction debut.

The Deadly Vows

In life or death, sometimes the actions toward another person are not forgotten. The invasions of another persons mind set can cause the viewer to take a step back, sit up and imagine that the enemy does not see what is coming. They are in the inner part of the enemy head to feel the pain and not mix it up. In a new line up of horror stories, Mr. Marsh takes us to the existence that there is more to life and death that we already know. Marsh focuses hard on showing us the different views of how pain and a doormat person can live inside us all and not realizing it until it is to late. Marsh mind set is so strong on the death of him, that he sheds a dark light just to allow us to read a little concerning the demons inside us all. The style he shows is very conversational and straight forward in his own dark ways. A book inside a book, "The Deadly Vows" is the mindset of Mr. Marsh. "The Deadly Vows" is powerful and offers us to see the evil we care not to see. The question after reading this book is, "Is it safe to go out again, knowing that there are people that are out there with his mindset. The "The Deadly Vows" is a dark and painful raw emotions book to read and it bares a spectrum of themes to comprehend.
